Love this! I also want more Darkar style notes! I’m rewatching gossip girl and Serena’s style in the first few episodes I’ve always felt was boho but I love the Prippie term better!
Not rlly prippie but I immediately thought of early bay city rollers fangirls as having insane vibes in relation to a lot of these pics - so much tartan bcs they’re a Scottish group so there’s a strong traditional element mashed onto rlly strong 70s looks. Lots of layers & patterns, and specifically for the fan outfits lots of great homemade elements to the outfits that makes them super fun. Not much specifically prep other than tartan and some great collars but just a fun weird vibe imo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ahhh yeah! I love this (and your latest post). This is making me rethink the boring plain belt I was about to buy from JCrew in favor of repurposing something else like scarves. I love prep looks but have a lot of boho items still, but I don't tend to mix them and maybe I should! I'd post some fits if I wasn't too shy to post fits and risk possible internet ridicule and stuff. :)
Sooooooo I need to start building my prippie wardrobe immediately!!! I try to toe the mod/twee line which in its own way is kinda prippie but the SS24 VW big pants/long vest with the dress shirt look is calling to me like the green goblin mask. Thanks for sharing!! Awesome deep dive into this :)
This was a goddamned delight, thanks! I'm well into the "is it comfortable enough to sleep in?" stage of my fashion journey but I still love fashion as art, so the posts where you're just so joyous about clothes are my favorites. Hippie and preppy have always been the two styles I return to but I hadn't really thought about how they make up "boho." Prippie is better.
Just realized “prippie” is my interpretation of “business casual” 😭 Ty for this, my mind is exploding with possibilities now (the poncho jodhpur look is seared into my brain, especially)
I love this! Unfortunately only very pointy white people or muslims can wear that heascarf style (lady with horse sweater). Everyone else would inaccurately signal muslim (at least where I live in Beverly Hills). Not necessarily a problem but also inaccuare self representation.
Also, think this is what my dad dressed like in high school (late 60s) according to pics i've seen. He won best dressed for senior superlatives, would steal his sister's love beads, his (now, looking back) self described style was "rich hippie" lol
Hi! I disagree—a headscarf is not inherently a hijab and wearing one is not considered offensive by any practicing Muslim I've ever talked to about this (and I have)! It's actually been a staple accessory in Hollywood for quite a long time—people like Grace Kelly, Jackie O, and multiple characters in Hitchcock films wore similar styles with frequency.
Here are some images you can check out of a classic midcentury head scarf look:
Hi! I didn't say it's offensive. Just that those who aren't pointy white people would signal muslim. As a semetic looking woman (and until recently, modern-orthodox practicing married jewish woman, still married just not modox anymore), I would be signaling something totally different than who I am. If i wrapped my head this way at shul it would garner looks!
Head wear within religious and cultural community is a meaningful signal to others about being in a group, and possibly being married within a certain group, in a way that holds much more weight than it does for people outside of these sorts of groups. It can be hard to understand unless you are part of a culture that wraps.
"Grace Kelly, Jackie O, and multiple characters in Hitchcock films" look very obviously white, unlikely to be muslim (though there are obviously white muslims). they can pull it off!
In beverly hills where I live, there are many muslim women who wrap this way. This is also a very modest outfit. If you walk around my neighborhood, most women dressed in the above way are muslim. I would 100% signal muslim walking around in this in my neighborhood. That's not a problem, as I've said. It is just not an accurate representation to who I am. Me wearing this outfit in a tichel would signal modox, which is more is a more accurate signifier of what community i belong to.
a white woman wearing this outfit just looks chic. not offensive. Just only pointy white people can do it without misrepresentation of cultural affiliation.
I’m Greek and Italian and I’ve never been mistaken for wearing a religious headscarf because headscarves are just a thing women have been covering their hair with to avoid the sun forever especially for people from sunny climates, and it’s pretty obvious if you’re wearing a t-shirt and shorts with limbs exposed and red nail polish, sandals, big sunglasses, etc and a headscarf tied under your chin, that you don’t practice modern Islamic modesty laws.
Ok fair enough! I think wrapped around the neck like that on a woman who isn’t super white looking would look Muslim to most people- although people with more discerning eyes I think would notice the hair showing and lack of pins. You could always try tying a headscarf under your chin, with your hair out, babushka style. That’s a very popular fashion look among women of all ethnicities, and doesn’t read religious to me.

It turns out this framework was what was missing for me to style preppy wardrobe pieces that haven't felt right without my hair dyed pink or blue.
Also, Anna Sui FW 2024 strikes me as prippie, though some looks teeter on the edge of earnestness.

If you notice the pic I’m referencing her outfit is very modest. What you’re describing is not within the context I am talking about.

I agree and love babushka style :)
